It is true that all people experience life individually; that we all literally are born alone and die alone.  That we see life uniquely through our own eyes, our own perspectives.  That is the scientific truth.  But somewhere along the line, man developed emotions and feelings, some that are really hard to explain.  Like the need to not feel alone during tough times.

The feeling of being alone is such an odd one.  You can feel completely alone in a crowded room filled with people who love you, or even with people you don’t know at all.  It’s not about feeling lonely.  It’s about needing someone who understands you or can relate to you.  And here’s the kicker — usually it’s a specific person that you need and when that one person can’t be there for you or for some reason isn’t there for you, suddenly it feels like you are all alone.

And sometimes, it’s not just in the times of hardship.  It’s in the times of happiness, when you want to share your happiness with people you love as you would hope they would want to share with you.  It’s about a friend knowing what to say and when to say it.  It’s about seeing through someone else’s eyes and feeling their struggle.

Being alone is such a heavy feeling.  Somehow, it takes so little to feel as though the whole world has turned against you or that no one is on your side.  Feeling alone makes it hard to get through the day.

These are the days when sometimes an angel can be in the right place at the right time and just say a simple thing like “I don’t say this enough, but I appreciate you.”

My dad was this angel to someone a few years ago.  A woman he met at the supermarket who had just been diagnosed with cancer.  He told her it would be okay and hugged this perfect stranger.  I believe that gave her the strength to get through that day.  Just recently she ran into my father again and reminded him of the story.  She had been looking for him since their encounter. She wanted to thank him for this pure act of kindness he bestowed upon a perfect stranger in need and let him know that she was okay, just like he said she would be.

Because although it may seem that we experience life alone, we are all human beings, and if we all took the opportunity to look around, to be an angel to someone in need, the world would be a better place.
