Working with your Spouse

This past week I was working in Chicago, supervising a video crew as they filmed a documentary-style short film that will be displayed at my company conference.  Most of the people I was working with I was meeting for the first time, but I knew a few of the main players.  What I didn’t know was that the leads on the project were husband and wife.

Once I learned this, it made it much more interesting to watch them work.  To see how comfortable they are with each other, how used to each other’s motions they are, and yet they can be completely professional on set.  I didn’t really ask about how it works and how it is spending so much time together personally and professionally.  All I could do was observe, and it seemed to work pretty well.

My fiance and I actually met while we worked at my first job.  He was doing a special video project with my editor.  We didn’t work directly with each other but within the same department.  Since then, we have worked together on a few side projects but nothing major.  Watching this couple work got me thinking.  What if my fiance and I did work together?  What if we ran a company together?  Could we do it or would it tear us apart?

I don’t know where my career path will take me or my fiance.  I know that on average a person will change careers 3-5 times in their lifetime.  I have been doing what I have been doing for 7 years, and I still have a good 40 years to work.  I can’t really imagine doing exactly what I am doing now forever.  I know that now is not the time to start a new business with my husband to be, but it might be something to consider for the future.

After all, we are already partners.  Maybe it could work?  You never know.
